Àsàbí is part of an ongoing body of work that explores Yoruba names and Oríkì (praise-names) as vessels of identity, memory, and cultural consciousness. Rooted in the traditions of Fiditi, a historic town in Oyo State known as the “Land of Fruits,” this piece examines the relationship between personal identity and cultural inheritance.

The title, Àsàbí, meaning “one who embodies culture,” serves as a reflection on how traditions, values, and ancestral knowledge continue to shape contemporary lives. In this work, culture is not treated as a distant memory or external ornament, but as a living presence carried within the individual. The figure becomes a symbolic archive, bearing visual elements that reference heritage, belonging, and continuity.

Through Àsàbí, I seek to celebrate cultural identity as a source of strength, dignity, and continuity. The work encourages reflection on the traditions that shape us, the stories we inherit, and the responsibility of preserving cultural memory in an ever-changing world. It is both a personal and collective statement—an affirmation that culture is not merely remembered; it is lived, embodied, and passed forward.
