Sekere Duke

“Sekere Duke” is a painting that I use Acrylic on canvas.

Sekere Duke embodies the meeting point between ancestry and nobility, tradition and elegance. Draped in ancient English aristocratic attire, the figure stands as a symbol of power, dignity, and cultural pride. The Sekere, replacing the human head, becomes more than a musical instrument; it transforms into a vessel of memory, rhythm, and spiritual identity.

The cowries woven around the Sekere signify wealth, protection, and ancestral connection within Yoruba culture, while the regal clothing reflects status and sophistication associated with old European nobility. Together, these elements create a dialogue between two worlds — African heritage and classical Western aristocracy.

This piece challenges conventional portraiture by removing physical identity and replacing it with cultural essence. The figure is not defined by a face, but by history, rhythm, and spirit.
