Agbabiaka John Mark
Agbabiaka is a Lagos-based Nigerian contemporary artist whose creative journey is rooted in heritage, resilience, and the transformative power of art. Born into a family where art was a cherished way of life, his earliest artistic memories were formed watching his mother work with batik and tie-dye techniques learned from the legendary Nike Art Gallery — early sketches on her wax-covered table marking the quiet beginning of what would become a devoted practice.
Agbabiaka holds a National Diploma in Fine Art from The Polytechnic Ibadan. His path was not without difficulty facing bureaucratic obstacles in his further studies but he pressed forward with characteristic determination, completing coursework and assignments despite the challenges. That perseverance became foundational to his artistic identity.
His career has been shaped by a rich variety of experiences: contributing to graffiti branding projects for Nigeria Breweries Plc, volunteering with The Better You Foundation and The Culture and Peace Festival, and serving as an Art Curator at Brilliant Brush Gallery in Lagos. These experiences deepened his belief in art’s capacity to transform communities and open minds. A pivotal moment came when he participated in the Connect Art Residency (Cohort 4) in Chicago, hosted by Hollie Davies, an experience that broadened his perspective and injected fresh creative energy into his practice.
Johnmark’s works have been exhibited globally, including at Dragonfly Gallery in Chicago, Harmer Gallery in London, Brilliant Brush Gallery in Nigeria, and Nosa Creatives in London.
