Tosin Oyeniyi
Tosin is a Nigerian contemporary visual artist, printmaker, and art educator based in Ibadan, Nigeria. Born in Oyo State in 1987, he grew up with an instinctive love for art that never left him from his early years in Ogbomoso through to his formal studies in Fine and Applied Arts at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University, where he graduated as a graphics specialist.
Though his academic foundation was in graphic art, it was through years of self-driven exploration, research, and relentless studio practice that Tosin discovered his true calling – linocut printmaking. He is widely recognised as the first visual linocut printmaker in Nigeria and ranks among the leading printmakers across Africa, a distinction earned through sheer dedication to a medium that demands both technical precision and creative vision.
His work is a vivid, multidimensional blend of naturalism and post-expressionism. Through richly textured, engraved prints, Tosin tells the stories of Africa its history, its people, its culture, and its contradictions. He portrays the everyday realities of ordinary African life with honesty and warmth, capturing both the weight of struggle and the quiet dignity of hope, all without veering into political commentary. His art bridges the historical and the contemporary, offering the world an intimate, unfiltered view of Black life through an African lens.
Professionally active since 2015, Tosin’s work has travelled far beyond Nigeria’s borders. His prints have been exhibited at the Woolwich Print Fair in London, Kingsborough Art Museum in Brooklyn, the International Cultural Center of Hammamet in Tunisia, ART Santa Fe in Mexico, 5 Points Art Gallery in Milwaukee, Fresco Gallery in Lagos, and Centro Cultural Esquel Melipal in Argentina, among others. His works have been acquired by international institutions and private collectors alike, including the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and the Africa Museum.
